SIN Global 2012

If things seemed a little quiet on the SIN blog and newsfeed last week, it’s because Nicole, Nicolina, Paolo, Shannon and I were in London rubbing shoulders with the rest of the global Science and Innovation Network at our all-Posts conference. As well as meeting face-to-face (often for the first time) with our stakeholders in the British government, we got to chat with other Science and Innovation Officers from all over the world about how they’ve been working in their own countries.

A few brave digital communicators defied the phone-ban to tweet their experiences of the conference, which you can read using the hashtag #singlobal. It’s mostly me and Nicole, but Nicole should have inspired a few more of us into the new media with a packed plenary session on digital outreach. With that in mind, feel free to ask us experts for advice, new SIN tweeters! [@narbour, @jcpreece]

All of use here in Canada will have quite a bit of follow-up from the conference, principally connecting more with our counterparts around the world. Multi-lateral projects were quite a big conversation topic towards the end of the week, and with the UK ramping up its presence in Brazil, China and India and opening new science posts in Nigeria, Qatar and South Africa there are opportunities aplenty for science diplomacy.

I cover science and innovation for Ontario (excluding Ottawa), liaising with all relevant research institutions and companies. In 2015 I expect to be working on future cities, high-performance computing and innovation in healthcare, as well as continuing prior work on dementia, regenerative medicine and science outreach. In the free time that I have after managing multiple small children, I enjoy home improvement and board/computer gaming. You can follow me on Twitter at @jcpreece
