27th September 2011

Almost a triathlon

Some weeks ago I wrote about several of my colleagues’ swimming accomplishments at Lake Valence. Now, inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, they have been entering foot and cycling races too.

On 4 September, 3 colleagues competed in the Budapest half-marathon. One male colleague ran alone, and two other female colleagues ran in relay. (This was the first time either had attempted a run of this magnitude – they are now considering doing the 42km Budapest “marathon” in October.) The race took place in the centre of the city in extreme weather conditions (a temperature above 30C) and many participants were sick. But with the encouragement of many supporters, our colleagues (Andy, Geory and Moni) were all successful.

And then on Saturday last an intrepid team of 7 colleagues set off from the Embassy at 7 a.m. Destination – Hungary’s third biggest lake Tisza-tó (approximately 140 km from Budapest). Reason – to participate in the Tour de Tisza marathon. Aim – to promote London 2012 Olympics and to have fun!

At 10.40 a.m. the race started and the team (Anna, Melinda, Ian, Lajos, Levi, Viktor and Zsolt), kitted out in personalised bike vests incorporating the Olympics logo, set off. Over 400 cyclists participated, ranging from serious sprinters to a dad towing his kids for a weekend freewheel around the lake. The Embassy Team fell somewhere in the middle of this array of cycling enthusiasts! The location was picturesque and perfect for cycling – a stunning lake with flat, tarmac paths. The team completed the 65 km course and 2 had exceptional performances, coming in 26th and 43rd places.

I understand comments during the race included “are we nearly there yet?”, “no really how much further to go?” and “I wish I had worn some proper cycling shorts!” However, all objectives were accomplished. Fun was had by all, and the team did much to raise awareness about London 2012. But there were a few aching bodies in the office on Monday morning.
