Changing seasons in Kyiv… and Vienna

When I was posted in Vienna from 1984-7 I enjoyed watching the signs that the seasons were changing.  As an autumn chill crept into the air, the Viennese hailed the arrival of the “Russian crows” – big, capable-looking birds which would strut their stuff around the parks and squares of the city for a couple of weeks then disappear before the snow swept in.  Another tell-tale was when workmen began building spooky wooden cases around the fountains and statues of the city to protect them from winter frost and snow damage.

Here in Kyiv I haven’t spotted any avian migration or statue packaging.  But a sure sign of autumn is when the city’s open-air cafes shut up shop.  Kyiv, with its continental climate, has a terrific outdoor cafe culture.  In the spring, open air cafes ranging from the simple to the sophisticated sprout like mushrooms in parks, along the river and near tourist hot-spots.  The resulting plethora of rest and recuperation opportunities is a treat both for residents and visitors throughout the long, hot summer.

Now, with temperatures (and conkers) plummeting, it’s time to settle back, enjoy the winter, and look forward to the reopening of the open-air cafes next spring – along with the prospect of Euro 2012.

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
