Countdown to the Marathon
As my Monster Month of training draws to a close and I enter the final 36 hours before the New York City Marathon on Sunday, I’d like to take this opportunity to praise the efforts of those involved and the causes which are being supported by thousands of competitors.
Within the British Consulate in New York, we have four staff members who are participating this weekend, and I look forward to seeing them at the finish line to share our relief – no doubt they will get there first! The charities we are representing include Team Continuum, St George’s Society, Team for Kids and Zara’s Center. I’m proud to be running for Team Continuum, a non-profit organization which provides immediate and vital, non-medical, assistance to cancer patients and their families, in addition to funding for health care facilities and foundations. I would like to thank those who kindly sponsored me and helped me to reach—and exceed—my sponsorship goal of $3,750.
The New York City Marathon is emblematic of the diversity and sense of community which is apparent in New York. Competitors from all 50 states and over 100 foreign countries attend, and an average of 2 million people are estimated to watch and support those who are running. I am told that several of my colleagues here at the Consulate will be at miles 11, 17, and 22 during the race to cheer us on, which is flattering and exciting. I’ll do my best to wave back! Any runner knows a little encouragement and support when you need it most can go a long way, and their enthusiasm will be greatly appreciated.
I wish all of my fellow runners the best of luck on Sunday. Holler if you see me – I will be sporting my Team Continuum shirt and a GREAT Campaign cap with a Union Jack on the back.
