Ukraine/EU: article by 5 European Foreign Ministers

The Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany have published an important article in the International Herald Tribune about Ukraine. In the article, the authors note that they see themselves as Ukraine’s allies and are convinced that closer political and economic ties, as well as people-to-people contacts, between the […]

EU/Ukraine: more important technical stuff

I blogged recently about what needed to happen before the Association Agreement and linked Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) could begin to work for Ukraine. At the end of that blog, I noted some suggestions that, if it wasn’t possible to sign and ratify the Association Agreement, it might be possible for some […]

Piracy and Ukraine: why the London conference on Somalia matters

Guest blog by Olena Sadovnik, Media and Digital Comms Officer, British Embassy Kyiv Most of our knowledge about pirates comes from adventure books and movies featuring characters like Long John Silver in Treasure Island or Sinbad the Sailor in Persian folklore. As well as pirate legends, however, piracy itself, unfortunately, has survived over the centuries. […]

Multi-culturalism, the Ukrainian “Brand”, and politically-motivated trials

I gave an interview to Korrespondent magazine recently which appeared in Russian in the paper edition on 24 February. It’s now available on-line.  The interview, also in English on our web-site, covers issues such as multi-culturism, Ukraine’s relationship with the EU; how to improve living standards in Ukraine; politically-motivated trials; visas; “the Ukrainian brand”; why […]

Ukraine: is discounted gas good? #2

I blogged recently about the complexities around Ukraine’s efforts to secure cheap gas from other countries. I noted that increasing the price of gas supplies to domestic consumers could help strengthen Ukraine’s hand in those negotiations. At present, some consumers of gas in Ukraine (mostly industrial users) pay market prices. Other users pay a lower, […]

Brilliant Ukrainian computer designers – and trade

It’s February, which means it must be time for the annual awards ceremony for the computer-aided design competition for universities organised by Birmingham-based Delcam, one of the world’s leading suppliers of advanced CADCAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) for industry. Having hosted several such receptions before and visited Delcam’s 10-year anniversary of cooperation with Ukrainian […]

Ukraine: is discounted gas good?

Gas matters. The embassy follows closely talks between Kyiv and Moscow on gas supplies; and between the Ukrainian authorities and the IMF about prices for domestic gas. We care because these talks can affect security of gas supplies to Europe; the Ukrainian economy; Ukraine’s domestic politics; and international relationships. According to the International Energy Agency, […]

London 2012: Gymnasts, Judo and Climate Change

Last week the embassy hosted a reception to celebrate the fact that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games this summer in London will be the greenest and most sustainable ever. I was pleased to welcome not only the President of the Ukrainian Paralympics Committee Valeriy Sushkevych, the General Secretary of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee Volodymyr […]

EU integration and Ukraine: next steps?

What has to happen in order for Ukraine to start benefiting from the Association Agreement with the EU, and the associated Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA), conclusion of negotiations on which were announced at the EU/Ukraine Summit on 19 December? It is important to understand that the Association Agreement and the DCFTA will […]

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
