Brunei’s latest Chevening Scholar

With Dinah and Brunei Chevening Alumni

I was pleased to host a farewell reception on Tuesday for our latest Chevening scholar, Senior Superintendent Dinah Amat Daud.

Dinah will be starting her studies in the UK later this month – MA in Applied Security Strategy at the Institute of Security and Strategy at the University of Exeter. She was clearly delighted to be returning to the UK having previously studied for a law degree at the University of Buckingham.

As a senior officer in the Royal Brunei Police Force, Dinah is a great role model for young women considering a career with the police. Historically – as in many countries – recruitment to the Royal Brunei Police Force used to be quite male oriented. But that has changed and I was pleased also to meet some of Dina’s female colleagues.

Our Chevening events are always enjoyable opportunities, both to congratulate departing scholars and to meet up with our impressive group of former Chevening scholars. We’re always pleased to hear what they’re achieving in their careers and to celebrate their successes. So it was particularly nice to see former Chevening scholar Nurliyana Fatin and to congratulate her on the award she had received earlier in the day from His Majesty The Sultan for her youth volunteer work.

Just a reminder that the deadline for applications for 2016/17 Chevening Scholarships is Tuesday 3 November 2015. Brunei citizens and permanent residents can apply. The ideal candidate would be in early to mid career, with a record of achievement and clear evidence of leadership qualities. More details at www.chevening.org/Brunei.
