British education: major visa reform for post-study visas

I commend a recent British Council blog, written by Education Director Maddalaine Ansell. Ms Ansell writes about the major reform to post-work study visas for international students which the UK Government has announced will enter into force from 2020.  “From next year,” she writes, “students graduating from British higher education institutions with at least an […]

The Government Art Collection in Vienna

The Duke of Wellington stares across the room towards a distant Queen Victoria, while Emperor Franz Josef – sash, ‘tache and all – observes impassively. Not the plot of a historical novel, but the paintings in the dining room at the ambassador’s residence in Vienna. Works from the Government Art Collection (GAC) are displayed in […]

White trees, blue skies and a green plan

Have you ever wondered why the trees are painted white in Vienna? To stop cars running into them, protect them from dogs? The special paint protects new bark from the summer sun! Woodland trees don’t require sun cream but the intense environments of our cities means it’s not only humans who need protection from harmful […]

Discovering Austria through Hiking in the Fog

“Are you getting out?” “Yes”, I replied. “I’m getting out of the cable car.  And the Prime Minister has made clear we will leave the EU on 31 October.“ I never thought I would have to explain British Government policy whilst trying to jump out of a moving cable car.  But perhaps it helps. Part […]

“Our Planet: Our Business” – what you can do

What climate-induced catastrophes might a child born today experience?  Such a child might see the disappearance of insects and pollinators.  During the child’s lifetime, plant and animal species will be wiped out and crops could fail.  This child may watch the coral reefs bleach and die.  She or he will wonder why the adults of […]

Brexit outreach events in Austria

You may have seen on social media in recent weeks that the embassy is organising another round of Brexit events around Austria. Previous events (we have done 17 so far) have been an important opportunity for us to share information with British nationals in Austria and to hear about your experiences. This next round of […]

A Tam O’Shanter in Vienna

The headgear is a subtle grey with a bright blue bobble.  It sits aslant the head, keeping you warm and dry. I was delighted recently to attend the HQ of the London Scottish Regiment in Westminster to be awarded with a “Hodden Grey Tam O’Shanter”.  How did this happen? The story begins with my decision […]

Outstanding British food and drink in Vienna

Nyetimber

‘You should try this English sparkling wine.’ ‘Really?  Is it any good?’ ‘Try some.  Make your own mind up.’ ‘OK.’  (Long pause.)  ‘Wow.  Can I have a couple more glasses?’ Our annual Queen’s Birthday Party at the residence in Vienna is not only one of the city’s hottest tickets (apologies, again, to all those we […]

After three years, more #keenonWien than ever

Today I celebrate my three-year anniversary in Vienna.  A lot has happened since I stepped off the train from London (via Salzburg) in August 2016. Together with my team at the Embassy we have have done a lot of work on Brexit – including doing our best to make sure that all 11,000 Brits in […]

Media freedom

A campaigning journalist in Mexico receives a call before dawn about an incident at a night club.  He quickly goes there.  As he arrives, he is shot dead – one of 99 journalists killed worldwide in 2018. This vivid example was given by the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, at a conference on media freedom in […]

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
