Extraordinary Beatles Day in Guatemala!

Today we welcome a guest blogger, Sigrid Pineda, our GREAT campaign co-ordinator and digital diplomacy champion (and closet Beatles fan), who writes about Beatles Day celebrated for the 4th year in Guatemala. Over to you Sigrid.

The Beatles are alive and playing in Guatemala. On Saturday 13th July we supported Guatemala celebrate Beatles Day with an all day concert in Guatemala City.  More than 1,600 people listened to more than 10 local bands playing tribute to the extensive repertoire of Beatles music. It rocked!

There was a great family atmosphere and we danced and sang for 8 consecutive hours. In between bands there were special raffles and prizes, with thanks to Distribuidora Marte and their kind donation of a bottle of Platinum Johnnie Walker whisky.

I’m always looking for innovative and creative ways to increase the Embassy’s digital footprint, so we decided to use the raffles to try something new. We used our Facebook and Twitter platforms during the event to encourage people to participate to win the prizes. We asked Beatles trivia questions that the audience had to answer on Twitter to have a chance of winning, one of our followers was the lucky winner of the bottle and besides having fun, we increased our numbers of fans and followers by 982 in Twitter and 4,136 in Facebook! Check out the pictures in the British Embassy, Guatemala City Facebook Page.

We are really impressed and proud of the number of fans Beatles have in Guatemala and most of all, how their music has impacted in young people, it was amazing to see so many young Guatemalans with such an in-depth knowledge of the history of the band and to see them sing and dance along with the songs!  The Beatles left a legacy that will endure through many and many years and through generations.

We hope to be singing again next year in the 5th edition of Beatles Day.

Guatemala Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!
