Juggling the Legal Challenges, Securing TCI’s International Reputation

I was delighted to announce recently the appointment of Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles as TCI’s new Attorney General. I have worked closely with her ever since arriving here, and I am in no doubt Rhondalee will make a splendid AG. She was appointed because we considered her the best person for the job, and she was the outstanding candidate in an international field of applicants.

As the media have noted there were also other reasons for marking Rhondalee’s appointment. She is the first Belonger to receive this top job in the legal profession, and moreover the first woman too. As the Premier remarked when I informed him of the appointment, this was an occasion for us all in TCI to be proud and happy.

The position of Attorney General carries big responsibilities. I have met British Attorneys General when they have travelled overseas to represent the UK, but I’ve never seen the work of an AG as close up as in TCI. It’s a job of many parts, requiring a good deal of skilful juggling.

As well as being the Legal Adviser to the Government, the AG sits in the House of Assembly to advise all Members on legal issues before them. In addition the AG is required to give me independent advice, which can sometimes put considerable pressure on the job holder to remain neutral and objective.

On a day to day basis the job is extremely varied. I and Cabinet colleagues have in the past weeks sought advice on issues as varied as broadcasting bills, the height of new developments allowed in TCI, land rights, and the care of juvenile offenders in the  community. We have also needed to know about TCI’s international responsibilities, and new financial service requirements.

With such diverse challenges and topics, you will understand why we took great care to appoint the right person for the job. I’m entirely confident that Rhondalee will rise to the challenges, and ensure that TCI is regarded internationally  as a destination where it is safe and secure to transact business. That reputation is one of the most important assets for our future growth and prosperity.
