17 views on stopping violence against women

What do actors, newscasters, diplomats, writers, business leaders, journalists and politicians have in common? All have contributed statements to the UK in Turkey website to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This is powerful and important stuff. The UK supports the goal of tackling violence against women; and on 29 May, […]

20 November in Istanbul

20 November is an important and sad day for the British Consulate General and for the wider community in Istanbul. Nine years ago the Consulate General was the target of a terrorist attack in which ten members of staff, two police officers guarding the building and many members of the local community were killed. Numerous […]

How football can teach you English

One of the things I know for sure after attempting to learn many languages over many years is that each person learns languages differently. Here in Istanbul there are countless institutions teaching English. Many are excellent. But did you know that there are also some fantastic interactive English language-learning sites on the Internet available free […]

Why allowing everything in England helps international business

It’s not often that I meet representatives of a British Company in the morning and read in the afternoon that they are contributing to UK economic success. So I’m intrigued here in Istanbul to meet leading law firm DLA Piper – one of several which have established substantial operations in Turkey – and to read […]

The Forty Rules of Love

Travelling to the UK: Priority Business Visas

Business is booming between the UK and Turkey. We are well on track to meet the commitment made in 2010 by Prime Ministers David Cameron and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to double trade between our two countries by 2015. Part of boosting business is getting our visa policy right. That’s why earlier this year we introduced […]

Palm Trees in Kazakhstan

Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, is not noted for its mild climate.  In fact it is amongst the world’s coldest capitals, with temperatures regularly below minus 30 in the winter. But at the centre of the city a huge atrium houses dozens of palm trees, surrounded by students and professors going about their business. […]

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
