Earth week: let’s clean up these streets!

We’re very proud of our green credentials, and the Embassy’s “Green Team” has been at it again, this time supporting a campaign to help keep Guatemala clean. To tell you more about it are two members of the team, Farah and Carmen. Over to you guest bloggers…..

My name is Farah Moran and I am the Embassy’s receptionist, and I also help organise fun activities such as the one we took part in last Sunday “Limpiemos nuestra Guatemala” (“Let’s clean our Guatemala”, in English). This activity was organized by Fundacion Azteca and its aim was to encourage people to each clean a part of their community, to set an example, including to the next generation, that throwing trash on the streets is unacceptable.

British Embassy team

It was a voluntary act of commitment and responsibility by Guatemalans as well as many foreigners who reside in the country and who wanted to be involved. In different parts of Guatemala small squads of cleaners gathered with groups made up of people with different ages and from different backgrounds.

Our Embassy has as one of its priorities a commitment to tackle climate change, including by setting an example and protecting the environment. Because of this we decided to get involved with Fundacion Azteca. And so together with a number of Embassy colleagues we swept the stables in front to our offices, gathering garbage along with other volunteers singing songs to help keep up our motivation. It was a great morning’s work!

Now over to Carmen…

My name is Carmen Granados and I work in the Ambassador’s residence. I would like to add my thoughts about the activity. There was great enthusiasm shown by all the participants to support the cause and to share the experience with each other. All of us that took part in the cleaning did so because we wanted to improve our environment, to keep our city clean.

Team helping to clean the city

I really think that these activities should be done more frequently in order to get better results that will benefit us all. I am grateful to the British Embassy for supporting programs that improve our environment!

Well, thanks Farah and Carmen for your thoughts on the activity. A really worthwhile cause, so thanks to you and the rest of the Embassy team who took part. If you would like to learn more about our green credentials then check our web site.

I have been in Guatemala since August 2009 as Deputy Head of Mission in the British Embassy. For the next few months I'll be stand-in Ambassador - Charge d'Affaires in diplomatic speak - until the arrival of our new Ambassador, Sarah Dickson. Julie Chappell, our former Ambassador, was a prolific blogger, so I hope I can match her energy as we have plenty of interesting material to blog about! You will also hear from our excellent Embassy team who are keen to continue blogging about their work and experiences in Guatemala.
