Chevening: Leading the way for bio-entrepreneurs

This week, rather than a blog from one of our Chevening alumni, we are delighted to be able to share with you all the news that Philippine Chevening scholar Maria Antonia “Maoi” Arroyo has recently been recognised in the prestigious annual TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awards that recognise selected young individuals and their achievements that have significantly contributed to the community and the nation.

The first Chevening Cambridge Trust Scholar from the Philippines, Maoi took up an MPhil Bio-Science Enterprise at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge in 2002. In 2004, shortly after completing her scholarship, she founded an organisation that specialised in matching the needs of Filipino businesses with innovations in biotechnology. Hybridigm Consulting Inc. is the first biotechnology consulting firm that partners with investors and/or scientists with the aim of commercialising biomedical devices, diagnostic kits, or potential therapeutics. A brainchild of her fruitful Chevening scholarship in London, Hybridigm Consulting Inc. is a pioneer in the Philippine Science Industry and has received many accolades for leading the way for bio-entrepreneurs in today’s generations.

Maoi truly embodies what a Chevening Scholar is. With the objective of enhancing the state of the science industry in the Philippines, she strives for excellence and excellence she has now achieved. Scholar, Leader, Nation-builder; Maoi is an inspiration for young Filipinos.
