¡Muchas felicidades! from Peru via St Andrews

Graciela Arrieta, a 28 year old lawyer and Chevening scholar from Peru, has been living in Scotland since January 2011, where she is studying for a Masters in Mining Law and Policy at The Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee;

The Royal Wedding is without doubt the emblematic event of British society in 2011. There is no newspaper, magazine, TV channel or social network that does not discuss the issue of the moment. From the largest and most modern cities to the Highlands of Scotland all are ready to celebrate.  Cafes, bars, restaurants, have announced  weeks ago reservations to see the wedding on a giant screen or a big HD television, accompanied by a good beer and “fish and chips" (the national dish of the UK).

St Andrews, birthplace of the love story, when both of them were students, is 15 minutes from Dundee, where I am studying.  St Andrews is a small cozy city, traditional, and picturesque, location of one of the world’s most important golf tournaments. This city has organized a special breakfast raffle in the Salvator’s Quad, University of St. Andrews, where 1500 people will see the wedding in a specially adapted space for the occasion.  After breakfast, the doors will be opened to receive the public and celebrate with a traditional Scottish feast: pipe bands, cappella singers and many other events.  I really hope to be able to join in!

"Wills and Kate", as they are known here, have earned the respect and attention of the British community and  those of us, who for various reasons,  are in the UK and feel this country as a part of us through their culture, customs and celebrations. Congratulations!

Graciela Arrieta, abogada de 28 años, está residiendo desde enero de 2011 en Dundee, Escocia, donde estudia una Maestría en Derecho Minero y Política en el Centro de Legislación y Política de Energía, Petróleo y Minería (Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy – CEPMLP) de la Universidad de Dundee;

La Boda Real es, sin duda alguna, el evento emblemático de la sociedad Británica en el 2011. No hay periódico, revista, canal de televisión, red social que no comente el tema del momento. Desde las ciudades más grandes y modernas hasta los Highlands de Escocia, ya están listos para celebrar; en cafés, bares, restaurantes, ya se anuncian desde hace algunas semanas la reserva de espacios para ver la boda en pantalla gigante o en un televisor HD, acompañados de una buena cerveza y “fish and chips” (el plato símbolo de UK).

St Andrews, lugar donde nació la historia de amor cuando ambos eran estudiantes, queda a 15 minutos de Dundee -donde estudio-.  St Andrews es pequeña, pero sumamente acogedora, tradicional, pintoresca y centro de los más importantes torneos de Golf. Esta ciudad ha organizado un desayuno especial en el Salvator’s Quad de la Universidad de St. Andrews, un sorteo abierto donde 1500 personas verán la boda en un ambiente especialmente adaptado para tal ocasión. Después del desayuno, las puertas estarán abiertas para recibir al público y celebrar con una fiesta tradicional escocesa: bandas de gaiteros, cantantes a capela y mucho más. Realmente espero encontrar cupo para entrar!

“Wills and Kate”, como aquí los conocen, han sabido ganarse el respeto y la atención de la comunidad británica y de aquellos que por diversas razones estamos en UK, y que sentimos este país como un pedacito de nosotros, en su cultura, costumbres y también celebraciones.  ¡Muchas felicidades!
