British nationals in Norway: Voting in the UK referendum on the EU

Legislation passed shortly before Christmas means that British nationals who have been a registered voter in the UK within the last 15 years will be able to vote in the referendum on UK membership of the European Union.

How British Nationals living in Norway can vote in the referendum

The date of the referendum is not yet known, but it is not too early to register to vote.

Any British national who has been registered to vote in the UK within the past 15 years can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Registration will require a National Insurance number, date of birth, and passport .

It is also possible to download and post back paper forms. It is advisable to return completed forms as far in advance of the deadline as possible.

The actual deadlines for registering to vote and applying for an absent vote will be set once the date of the referendum is known. After registering, expatriate voters can choose how to vote – by post, by proxy, or in person at the polling station.  Those who were too young to have registered when they left the UK can register as an overseas voter if parents (or guardians) were registered in the UK in the last 15 years.
