Problems with families and children are often even more complicated when there is a transnational element. Our consular teams regularly hear heart-wrenching stories about child abductions and custody disputes which may result in a child living on the other side of the world from one of its parents. International Social Service (ISS) is an impressive NGO that helps families all around the world. This week I hosted a reception for the Australian Branch to meet members of the Diplomatic community in Canberra.
ISS Australia’s President Vedran Drakulic, and Executive Director Fionn Skiotis explained the role of their organization. It is funded by the Australian government, voluntary contributions and some fees for particular services, like family mediation. ISS offer support and practical advice in a range of circumstances from abduction to adoptees seeking to find their birth parents. They only get involved where there is an international element to the problem. Their international network of branches in over 100 countries, helps them to carry out this role.
My colleagues from a number of Embassies and High Commissions were very interested to hear from ISS. Not all of them were already aware of the organization, and several said they would be keen to recommend them in future.
