As I complete my time as UK Ambassador in Qatar, I am delighted to see that the historic friendship between Qatar and the UK is now stronger than ever – and set to strengthen even more in the coming years. This is a partnership in it’s true sense. It covers defence, foreign policy, culture, education, energy and trade and investment, to name just some of the areas in which the bilateral relationship is the envy of other nations.
For me, the annual British Festival, launched in 2014, epitomises the dynamism, creativity and growth of Qatar and the UK’s partnership. The next British Festival in March 2016 promises to be even more exciting.
In the middle of a volatile region, Qatar has assumed a leading role, both in terms of its economy and its foreign policy ambition. That ambition shows no sign of diminishing and that means even more opportunities to build cooperation with the UK. Qatar is now that UK’s third largest export market in the region.
Perhaps the greatest opportunity at the moment is the role the UK is playing in supporting Qatar to host a successful World Cup in 2022. The UK’s expertise and experience of hosting major international sporting events – including the Rugby World Cup at the moment – means we are particularly well placed to do that.
I look forward to seeing the UK’s relationship with Qatar progress to the next level in the coming years through increased trade and investment, defence, security, political dialogue and a host of exciting projects. That particular challenge will be for my successor, Ajay Sharma.
As I move on to another diplomatic role, I also want to express my gratitude to the many Qataris, British and other expatriates who made my family’s time in Qatar so enjoyable and productive. We have made many friends. It has been a privilege to serve in Doha and professionally rewarding – and fun! – to work in a country where amazing things are happening all the time and everything seems possible.
