Great British Nuclear Expertise

Been in London this week to address the Autumn gathering of the UK Nuclear Industry Association. Emerging Europe taking its rightful place at the global nuclear table. Civil nuclear is really something where the UK is a world leader. Emerging Europe nuclear is probably the single biggest high value opportunity which UK Plc has in this dynamic and exciting region. What has the UK got to offer?

In nuclear we are talking about a 250 year programme from front-end to decommissioning. We do not offer reactor technology. We offer everything else. The UK also relies on private sector financing to develop its nuclear energy competency. We have got great design capability, commissioning and decommissioning expertise. Regulation, skills and safety is at the core of what we do.

Looking across Central Europe there are major ongoing programmes in the Czech Republic and Hungary; Bulgaria is engaging, Slovakia is de-commissioning and Poland is looking at 2 greenfield sites as the country seeks to diversify its energy mix. UK Plc is already engaged in Emerging Europe – AMEC, Mott Macdonald, WS Atkins and Rolls Royce. Big British brands focused on modernising the region’s energy mix.

There’s a lot going. This week’s briefing in London puts Emerging Europe close to the top of the global energy opportunity charts. The British Embassy network around the region is actively engaged in commercial diplomacy programmes to enable UK Plc to engage in each market. What came out of the meeting and where’s the opportunity for British companies?

In Poland 3 key points:

– The establishment of a robust regulatory framework – the British and Polish regulators are already talking – that’s good

– The independence and neutrality of the UK sector – we do not have any reactor technology so our engagement is focused on making it happen and not making a specific technology work

– Financing and insurance need to be an integrated part of the development programme

A great week. We have a very active plan of nuclear engagement activity. Our goal is to present UK global expertise to key energy decision makers in Emerging Europe.
