Did you know that 18 October 2013 is the 7th EU Anti-trafficking Day?
Did you know that the UK is a signatory to, and has adopted, the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, Supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime?
Did you know that in 2012, some 125 people from Hungary were identified as potential victims of human trafficking in the UK?
Did you know that the British Embassy in Budapest is trying hard to significantly decrease the chances of people falling victims and to put those responsible for this disgusting crime behind bars? Both in 2012 and in 2013 the embassy, with other likeminded diplomatic missions, sponsored the Hungarian Interior Ministry’s highly successful awareness raising campaigns at the grand Sziget Festival. Through quizzes, interactive games and informative lectures by experts, the close to 400 000 Sziget goers had the opportunity to learn more about the dangers and prevention of this terrible phenomenon, as well as on who (and how) to notify if they witness or hear about human trafficking.
Members of the embassy have also been closely cooperating with British and Hungarian detectives to help their investigation on putting an end to vulnerable Hungarian girls being trafficked to the United Kingdom for forced prostitution and to capture those responsible for tricking them.
Did you know that with vigilance, caution and proactive attitude you too can save people from falling victims to human trafficking? Learn more about how the UK is tackling this problem.
