Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship?
I chose to apply for an apprenticeship because I view it as a way to gain practical experience in a role and industry. It appealed to me that you get to learn on the job from experienced professionals and be able to put what you learn into practice. I think that apprenticeships can be invaluable in terms of what you learn and the skills you develop. It is also a bonus that you get payed while doing so.
What attracted you to apply for the GES Apprenticeship Programme?
The Government Economics Service Apprenticeship Programme attracted me as it is not only a way to study economics and gain an economics degree, but also an opportunity to put economic theory and skills into practice. Another thing about the apprenticeship that attracted me was that I would be starting a career in the Civil Service. I found it appealing as there are great opportunities within the Civil Service that this programme could lead me onto.
What advice would you give to those who are thinking about applying?
The assessment centre can seem intimidating especially if you have not done anything similar before. I would say try not to worry and do your best to get the most out of it as I think it is something that you can learn from.
What are you enjoying most about the programme so far (you can also describe what you are looking forward too)?
I joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office shortly after it was formed in September 2020. It has also been great to see how important economics and evidence are for foreign and development policy. One thing that I particularly enjoy about the programme is that even in my first couple of months, I feel like a valued member of my team and I have done a lot of work that I am proud of. Personally the work I have been involved in has been really varied and interesting and I feel I have learnt a huge amount in such a short period of time.
